SOLAS 1974, Chapter III, Rule 11.5, Chapter II-2, Regulation 13.1.3, and Regulation 13.3.2.5.1 require all escape routes to be marked with photoluminescent signs or signs illuminated by emergency lighting or both.

IMO publication IMO-981E indicates that exit signs must include a 'running man' pictogram, an arrow, and the word 'Exit.' Passengers and crew on any vessel must be aware of the available evacuation routes from within the ship. Typically, there are two types of evacuation routes: primary and secondary. The primary evacuation route is the quickest and simplest way to reach the muster station or survival craft. The secondary evacuation route is specifically designated for use when the primary route is unavailable.
